Children's Expeditions

What does an expedition consist of?

Expedition activities are dependant on the location but they all will consist of adventure! There will be alot of walking but the children have never noticed because they are having so much fun on the way! Each day and each expedition will be completely different but some of our activities have included: > Adventuring through forrests > Animal spotting > Using nets to catch & release fish, newts and other creatures safely > Tree climbing > Den building > Rockpooling > Games > Discovering caves and ruins > Toasting marshmallows > Learning about wilderness survival > Finding lots of interesting things to look through our portable microscope & so much more! They will have a fantastic time in the great outdoors, playing, learning and making some friends along the way!

When are the expeditions?

Expeditions are primarily during the school holidays; Summer, October break, February break and Easter.

How do I book?

At the moment, we send out an email to our mailing list to announce expedition dates shortly before announcing it online. We ask you to email us to request the spaces and dates you would like to be booked on. We will email back to let you know if there is space and request some details so we can save your spot. If you would like to be among those who hear what's going on first with The Wilderness Rangers and get the first chance to book then please either subscribe using the subscribe bar on our website, let us know via our contact page or email us at thewildernessrangers@outlook.com. We are currently trying to create a simple online booking system.

What should my child wear and bring with them?

What to wear The weather is always unpredictable in Scotland so please ensure your child is dressed appropriately and in comfortable clothes that you don't mind getting mucky! We would suggest checking the weather forecast online the day before an expedition. It is really important to have comfortable footwear for the children as there can be a bit of hiking through forrests and parks so we recommend comfy trainers or shoes you don't mind getting mucky. Please note that Wellies are not always the most comfortable for a full day of adventuring as they can begin to rub by the end of the day. We would definitely recommend bringing a bringing a second pair of trainers/shoes incase they feel they need to change to be more comfortable. What to bring We recommend a bringing a backpack so they can easily carry their neccesities for throughout the day. Please pack your child’s lunch, a bottle of water/juice, any medicine they require such as inhalers and anything else you believe they may need (e.g. extra layers, suncream, spare shoes if neccessary). We will provide snacks (in the form of fruit) and water if required.

How long are the expeditions?

Drop off for expeditions is 9am and pick up is at 4pm. We send an email around a week before the expedition day with all the relevant information such as drop off location, what to bring and a risk assessment.

Where do you go?

We visit many different areas of natural beauty in and around Edinburgh and the Lothians. Some of the locations we visit are: > The Pentland Hills Regional Park > Vogrie Country Park > John Muir Country Park > Dalkeith Country Park > Flotterstone Country Park > Musselburgh Lagoons > Aberlady Bay Nature Reserve > Cramond Beach >Portobello beach We take our junior Rangers to areas where they have the chance to get stuck in and explore the outdoors, discover new and exciting wildlife and become inspired to do more themselves.

What do you do if it rains?

We live by a quote by the great Billy Connolly - "There's no such thing as bad weather - only the wrong clothes". We go ahead with expeditions no matter the weather (except in extreme circumstances) so please make sure your child is well prepared with their clothing. Many of the places we go we trek through forests so that tends to give us some shelter! We will always try to find a nicely sheltered spot for when we stop for lunch.

How much is it?

Full day expeditions are £35 and include fruit as snacks and water if needed/wanted.

How do I pay?

We currently take payment by BACS bank transfer. Once we have confirmed that there is space for you to book we will email you with the relevant information. We will soon be setting up an online payment system.

Is my child safe?

Safety is the number one priority of The Wilderness Rangers. Both Chief Rangers are First Aid trained and have attended several courses on outdoor first aid and care. Every location we visit has its own unique risk assessment completed by us as well as rigorous trial runs of expeditions to ensure that every location is suitable and safe for your child. Rangers are also fully PVG Disclosure checked.

How does this benefit my child?

The Wilderness Rangers’ motto is Explore, Discover, Inspire. We do everything we can to introduce your child to new experiences and natural wonders. We work outdoors as much as possible getting your child away from screens and getting them active with others of their own age. We pride ourselves on improving the physical and mental well being of all our Junior Rangers by encouraging teamwork and communication, problem solving and craft sessions, self-expression and subconscious education all in the great outdoors. Our objective is to have fun and everything we do is driven by that cause.
